September 21, 2013
We left this morning at 5:10 am for our 7 hr drive (I-20 and
I-26) to the Charleston International airport where we left our car and were
shuttled to the Ansonborough Inn in Charleston.
We arrived at the airport at 1:15 pm and were pick-up by the shuttle at
1:40 pm. After checking into the hotel,
we were fitted for our bikes and took a short bike ride to see some of the
picturesque neighborhoods of Charleston.
The ride took us “south of Broad” with great views of the
harbor, East Bay Street homes, Battery Park (cannon facing the harbor), and the
“French quarter” area. The streets are
fairly narrow and tree lined with a lot of charm. We passed through the historic Market, which
was bustling with activity on Sunday afternoon.
St. Philip’s Church, which is one of Charleston’s oldest churches, is
located on Church Street with an adjacent cemetery.
The group gathered late in the afternoon for introductions
and an overview of the week. Afterwards,
we walked to our group dinner at 82 Queen, which is a low-country seafood
restaurant. The dinner was excellent.
The following are some pictures from our first day in Charleston.
